Republic: Spring Menu Launch

Republic recently launched their new spring menu and I was invited along to have a taste of the new offerings.

The menu has an interesting range of dishes, from beetroot carpaccio to squid ink spaghetti, there’s something to suit all taste-buds. To my surprise is really enjoyed the beetroot carpaccio, it was like really thin pickled beetroot, it had a slight tang, but was also a little sweet and crunchy, its a great starter. Other dishes I enjoyed included the scallop and house bacon with sweet corn puree and dessert of course…Dark Chocolate Mi-Ciut….what is this you ask? It is the fancy name for flourless chocolate cake, which came with strawberry compote, vanilla bean ice-cream and hazelnut toffee….yum!

Here are some photos from the evening….If only you could taste it through the computer! The next best thing though, would be to go to Republic and try them for yourself! Enjoy

A Vietnamese feast at Mai Kitchen

Don’t you hate it when you get that feeling when you just want some tasty, hearty food but can’t be bothered cooking and then you just end up eating something that’s really not good for you…lets not name names!…..It happens to me all the time. But guess what! It doesn’t need to happen anymore because I want to share with you a delicious new Vietnamese restaurant that has opened its doors in Adelaide….Mai Kitchen.

Mai Kitchen and Lee from Adelaide Food Central invited a group of us bloggers to have a taste of their delicious offerings and delicious it was! We ordered a range of entrees, mains, desserts and drinks. I had Hanoi spring rolls, sizzling chilli chicken, fried rice, banana fritters and a refreshing coconut juice. I have to say I loved it all, everything just tasted so authentic and they weren’t stingy on the serving size either, in fact they were actually too big, which meant we got to take doggy bags home! Something that also needs to be mentioned is that they have a dedicated vegan menu, I love when menu’s are all-inclusive.

My favourite dish of the evening was the Hanoi spring rolls (see below). The different textures and flavours of this dish were just heaven…crunchy coat, mince filling, wrapped in crisp lettuce, and showered in the famous Vietnamese dressing…yum! I’ve been craving it ever since!

Not only was the food delicious but the service was great as well, everyone had a smile on their face which I really appreciated, and the owner mentioned to me that “the customer is his boss”…isn’t that just lovely!

My favourite food spots around Chinatown

Chinatown, Adelaide is a mecca for tasty, wholesome food, from the Central Markets to the endless alleyways filled with hidden gems, there’s definitely going to be something to suit everyone’s tastebuds. Now that I work just down the road from Chinatown, it has become my daily lunch destination, so I thought I would share with you a few places that I have been loving, both sweet and savoury!

Located within the arcade is a little whole-in-the-wall bakery called; Nanna Hot Bake, this little shop has been a favourite of my families for years, and never fails to deliver the most soft, fresh, tastiest buns filled with various fillings from chilli anchovies to pork and even coconut. It’s a great place to visit for a snack before embarking on your market shopping.

PappaRich is fairly new to Adelaide, but for at least a month or two after opening their doors, there was always a line of hungry people waiting to get their hands on their delicious Malaysian offerings. I have to admit I was one of those hungry people waiting in line for at least 20 mintues, but it was definitely worth it. Fast and friendly service just adds to the experience, I can’t get enough of the place!

Chinatown Cafe is another major fave lunch spot for me and many others, just going from the busyness of their lunchtime service. You’re lucky to get a table or even find a place to stand inside. Their food is so yummy and the portions are not stingy at all, also the condiments, incuding garlic chilli, hot chilli, and soy sauce just finish of the meal perfectly…just thinking about it makes me salivate!

And to finish of we must have dessert! St Louis is my favourite dessert place around Chinatown and my favourite waffle place ever! Their selection is huge and each dessert is served so beautifully. It’s a cozy little place, great for dessert or after dinner tea/coffee with friends. My waffle consumption amount has grown hugely since I was introduced to the place, but I just can’t help myself!

Here are few photos to get you salivating also!

The Curious Squire: New Menu Lauch

The Curious Squire in North Adelaide recently launched their new menu and I had the chance to sample some of the new delicious offerings. First of all, for those of you who haven’t heard of The Curious Squire, it is a cool restaurant and bar serving rich, hearty soul food from Texan routes. This was my first time at The Curious Squire because I did try to go another time with some friends but they were completely packed…which told me that the food must be special. Anyway I was so excited to finally try the food!

Below you will see the many dishes that we had the pleasure of sampling. First of, you will see the fried green tomatoes, which is the best invention ever. I have to admit, I am totally into eating anything fried, so this was perfect because it was a vegetable, which makes it healthy…right? Further along you’ll see chicken and waffles, yes you heard me right…chicken and waffles! And not just chicken and waffles but chicken, waffles AND maple bacon…sorry for saying chicken and waffles a million times. Anyway, with the addition of pickles on this dish…it kind of tasted like a deconstructed chicken burger…which I loved! So all the savoury dishes I tasted, I have to say, were delicious…then came our sweet little dessert…S’mores. I have to say it was my first time eating s’mores, I felt like I was in an American movie. They were so yummy, with nutella and marshmellow oozing out the side….it was such a treat, and the perfect ending to a delicious hearty meal.

Can’t wait to visit The Curious Squire to eat all of these yummy dishes again!

Fried Green Tomatoes – corn crusted, ranch, squire sauce, chives

Sweet Potato Fries

Pulled Pork Quesadillas – pork, cheese, queso, jalapenos, sour cream, lettuce, salsa

Cajun Blackened Kingfish – baby greens, corn salsa, remoulade, tabasco

Chicken & Waffles – crispy fried chicken, buttermilk waffles, bacon, maple syrup, pickles, hot sauce, butter

 S’mores

Chef Dong Chinese Restaurant

Chinese food is one of my favourite types of food, so I was excited to receive a very special invitation to try Chef Dong’s new restaurant, named after himself; ‘Chef Dong’.

Chef Dong is the owner of the extremely well known Fortuna Court Restaurant located in Norwood. With the success of Fortuna Court, Chef Dong has opened the doors to his new restaurant located in St Peters, Adelaide, just 2 months ago and it already seems to be hit. Nestled in amongst a row of shops, you would never know this beautiful, spacious, authentic restaurant exists, but once you’ve tasted the food, it will be your go-to Chinese restaurant.

Chef Dong himself prepared a special range of dishes for me to taste, starting with entreés, as you’ll see below we were treated to steamed pork buns, chicken dim-sims and dumplings. Each dish was delicious in its own right, perfectly seasoned and full off flavour. Chef Dong explained that they make everything by hand, from scratch, down to the dim-sim wrap and the steamers used have been custom made to ensure they maintain impeccable hygiene standards by incorporating a plastic guard around the edges. These are the details that we wouldn’t really think about when deciding where to go to have to Chinese food, so it’s really nice that Chef Dong has thought about these things for us.

Next came out this very interesting dish, it may look like just any normal chicken salad, but once you dig into it, you will come across clear, jelly like strands, can you guess what it might be?

It’s jelly fish! yes jelly fish, I was slightly nervous to try it, but it actually didn’t have any weird flavour to it, it was more of a refreshing addition, with a crunchy texture.

Then came the main course….yes all of these dishes! We were treated to Fried Rice, Scallops with Vermicelli Noodles and Soya Bean Paste, Tea Smoked Pork ribs, and Roast Duck. My favourite was surprisingly the scallops. I’ve never had anything like that before but it was really tasty, they were slightly spicy but not so spicy that they would burn your tongue. I can’t say enough that everything was just full off flavour and the serving sizes were very large.

I had such a lovely experience at Chef Dong’s, it’s a great restaurant for having family dinners, business meeting or just general catch up’s with friends. They are open for lunch from 11am to 3pm, and dinner from 5pm till late.

Chef Dong has 26 years of experience working in the industry and understands the importance of treating his guests well, he is happy to take special requests from guests and will change a dish up if needed. Chef Dong’s has already had special guests, including  Member of the Legislative Council; Honourable Jing Lee and well known chef Cheong liew, who had great things to say about Chef Dong.

Below are some image of their extremely large table, perfect for large gatherings, and they also have two separate dining rooms, for special functions. The also have a window which looks into the kitchen, so guests can see their food being made as it happens! Something I must also mention is that Chef Dong’s is open every single day of the year!
