My favourite food spots around Chinatown

Chinatown, Adelaide is a mecca for tasty, wholesome food, from the Central Markets to the endless alleyways filled with hidden gems, there’s definitely going to be something to suit everyone’s tastebuds. Now that I work just down the road from Chinatown, it has become my daily lunch destination, so I thought I would share with you a few places that I have been loving, both sweet and savoury!

Located within the arcade is a little whole-in-the-wall bakery called; Nanna Hot Bake, this little shop has been a favourite of my families for years, and never fails to deliver the most soft, fresh, tastiest buns filled with various fillings from chilli anchovies to pork and even coconut. It’s a great place to visit for a snack before embarking on your market shopping.

PappaRich is fairly new to Adelaide, but for at least a month or two after opening their doors, there was always a line of hungry people waiting to get their hands on their delicious Malaysian offerings. I have to admit I was one of those hungry people waiting in line for at least 20 mintues, but it was definitely worth it. Fast and friendly service just adds to the experience, I can’t get enough of the place!

Chinatown Cafe is another major fave lunch spot for me and many others, just going from the busyness of their lunchtime service. You’re lucky to get a table or even find a place to stand inside. Their food is so yummy and the portions are not stingy at all, also the condiments, incuding garlic chilli, hot chilli, and soy sauce just finish of the meal perfectly…just thinking about it makes me salivate!

And to finish of we must have dessert! St Louis is my favourite dessert place around Chinatown and my favourite waffle place ever! Their selection is huge and each dessert is served so beautifully. It’s a cozy little place, great for dessert or after dinner tea/coffee with friends. My waffle consumption amount has grown hugely since I was introduced to the place, but I just can’t help myself!

Here are few photos to get you salivating also!

The Mile End: a stylish pub night out

My family and I enjoy going out for a pub meal once in while, but I have to say it’s not a very stylish affair. For me, going out for a pub meal means getting into my comfy clothes and preparing myself for a giant schnitzel and many visits to the salad bar. When I received an invite to The Mile End for the launch of their new look, I was expecting the typical pub experience, nothing too fancy.

To my surprise as I entered The Mile End, I had a feeling I was in for something a little different, and boy was I impressed!

The Mile End has been around for 175 years…that’s a lot of years right! They recently had a make-over to bring out the natural beauty of the space. They have done an amazing job in making the space inviting and cozy…It has the feel of a mountain lodge….not that I’ve ever been to a mountain lodge but I can imagine! Anyway you will see what I mean through the photos below!

So the food is what impressed me the most, yummy food that looks fancy…..I couldn’t ask for anything more. You will see below some of the dishes we were treated to, including roast beetroot, pear and haloumi sliders, warm chicken, pancette and pear salad, crab linguini and chocolate urge. I actually can’t pick a favourite, they were all delicious in their own way. I would recommend trying them all out….why not!?

Sushi Planet Official Opening

Sushi is a type of food that you either love or hate, but I think most people in this day and age love it. It’s usually easy to eat, tasty, fresh, and there are so many flavour combinations to choose from, so how can you not love it?!

Well Adelaide’s newest sushi restaurant; Sushi Planet, makes sushi even better by giving you the option of enjoying freshly made sushi in a beautiful restaurant or having it delivered to your door step if you can’t be bothered going out, how good is that!

Sushi Planet officially opened in style a couple of weeks ago and I was so excited to attend and have a taste of their delicious offerings. As you will see below, not only is the sushi fresh and tasty but it is also beautifully presented, I did alot of eating with my eyes that night! You will also see below one of their many pretty cocktails on offer…..sushi and cocktails…..some people would call that heaven! Along with the sushi, you can also choose to have delicious chicken skewers with a thick, sticky, yummy sauce (as seen below) these were actually my favourite, they were so flavoursome.

I had a great time catching up with friends over sushi at the opening party and I look forward to going back and tasting all the different options on the menu. Although if I feel lazy I might just have to order and have it delivered, just so I can have one of those cute little sushi cars turn up at my house, you should too!

Ginza Miyako: Menu Launch

I was recently invited to the new menu launch at Ginza Miyako, located in the Stamford Plaza Hotel. Ginza Miyako is a Japanese restaurant, with a French and Western twist. With two separate areas offering diners two different experiences, one of which consists of traditional tables and chairs and the other, offers guests a traditional Japanese experience, where you feel like you’re sitting on the floor but with the comfort of sitting on a chair.

“Ginza Miyako has recently appointed a new Head Chef, Kazuki Ushiro, to lauch a new fushion Japanese menu. Ushiro, who is a master of both French and Japanese cuisines, has designed the menu that combines the best of both worlds to bring the most exquisite meals possible.”

The meal began with a fried oyster served with black rice risotto, red cabbage and tartar sauce. This was delicious and perfect for those of us who don’t like the feeling of eating a fresh oyster. It was crunchy, beautifully seasoned and so easy to eat, the risotto also added a nice texture.

Next came the orange cured ocean trout served with fennel seaweed salad, carrot purèe and wasabi cream sauce. First of all, lets just stare at the beauty of this dish, I felt bad to dig into such beauty! Once I finally did, I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed it, since I’m not really a fan a raw fish. The addition of the carrot, orange segments, fennel salad and wasabi sauce complimented the fish so well.

Then came my favourite dish of the evening….Sushi…This Sushi is not like the ones you get elsewhere, this sushi was special, one was filled with blue fin tuna, king fish and salmon and the other was filled with smoked eel and cream cheese. I had these in one bite, so delicious. I am usually the one who goes for chicken in my sushi, but I would definitely have these two again!

Next we were served slow cooked South Australian duck breast with mashed potato, lentils, beetroot purèe and citrus teriyake sauce. I recently made a personal decision not to eat duck, but for the purpose of trying, I did taste it and then offered the rest to someone else at the table. Upon trying the duck it was really tasty, what surprised me even more was how tender the meat was. Allthough I didn’t eat all of the duck, I did enjoy the mashed potato and lentils, they were delicious, I would go back just for them.

The final dish of the savoury courses was a charcoal grilled wagyu scotch fillet with mushroom mashed potato, seasonal vegetables, carrot purèe and red wine Japanese citrus chili sauce. As I don’t eat beef, they kindly served me lamb instead. Once again a tasty and beautifully presented dish. I had never tried nor heard of mushroom mashed potato, but it was actually very tasty. Each part of this dish worked so well together.

And last but definitely not least, dessert. For dessert we were served a marscapone cream cheese and strawberry mille-feuille with rhubarb ice cream and japanese plum wine sauce. What a perfect and refreshing way to finish off such a rich meal. My favourite part of this dish was the marscapone cream and the strawberries in the crisp pastry, so yummy.

I definitely recommend Ginza Miyako for your next dinner out! You will not be dissapointed.

The Taxpayer: Spring Menu Launch

The Taxpayer, Adelaide’s hot little hang-out burger and booze bar recently launched their new spring menu and I was invited for a sneak peak taste of the new offerings. On arrival, I knew we were in for a treat as the tables were decked out with Corn tortilla chips served with guacamole, sour cream and salsa, and jugs of sangria and punch, family style. As we sat down the sliders started filling the room. As I don’t eat beef (although the beef burgers looked amazing with strips of bacon hanging out!) I was looking forward to trying the vegetarian option, which did not disappoint. It was filled with a slice of grilled halloumi, sautéed mushrooms, caramalised onion and pineapple relish, alfalfa sprouts and herb mayo, it was so delicious (I’m definitely going back for more!). After the sliders, we were treated to their special fries with parmesan and truffle oil, another thing I’m going back for, these fries tasted like heaven! Finally to finish of the meal, we were spoilt with a bourbon spiked milkshake, ohmygod!

This place did not disappoint, as it was my first time trying the Taxpayer, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but now I know that I will be returning. By the way, not only was the food and drinks delicious, but the space is so comfortable and inviting, the perfect place to just hang-out after work or with friends on the weekend.
