OLEA: Adelaide’s hot new modern Greek restaurant

“Olea seeks to redefine modern Greek cuisine by taking the best of Greece’s culinary traditions and bringing them into the present day using an intricate understanding of the modern palette.

Specialty ingredients imported from Greece are used alongside South Australia’s best produce to craft a menu that invokes flavours from around the world layered over the top of a Mediterranean foundation.”

I was recently invited to the official launch of Olea, a modern Greek restaurant tucked away within Adelaide’s new hotspot Electra House located on King William Street. It was my first time at Olea so I wasn’t sure what to expect, on arrival I was blown away by the restaurants beauty and warmth. It was a cold, rainy day so being welcomed into a warm, inviting space was much appreciated. I’ve never been to Greece but I’m thinking the colour scheme and decor mirror what the restaurants in Greece are like.

We were treated to an array of dishes, from local kalamata olives to slow braised lamb. My favourite dishes from the night were the Greek dips with pita and traditional koulouri bread. This dish was not only yummy, but it’s a great dish to share before moving onto the main meal. My next favourite was the Spencer Gulf king prawns dressed with baby capers, lemon and oregano. If I was home sitting on the couch with a bowl of these prawns, I would have gone in with the fingers but because I was at the restaurant I had to restrain myself to using cutlery…they were finger licking worthy! The next favourite, which I think was a favourite amongst most of the guests was the slow braised lamb which they served alongside roast potatoes and grilled cabbage. The lamb was so tender, flavoursome and went perfectly with the potatoes and cabbage. I can just imagine this kind of meal being a regular in family homes in Greece. My most favourite dish of the night was the rice stuffed tomato served on kefalotyri cheese foam, flavoured with mint and dill. The textures of this dish made it, with the al dente rice, soft tomato shell and cheesy sauce….I’m salivating just thinking about it….it was so yummy!

Below you will see photos of these dishes…I hope they get you salivating as well.

Let me know if you get a chance to go and tell me what your favourite dishes were, I’d love to hear from you!
