A Night of Pampering at Fresh Hair & Body

I was recently invited to Fresh Hair & Body on The  Parade for a fabulous night of pampering. They were celebrating the launch of their fourth Adelaide salon, based in St Clair.

Fresh Hair & Body is owned by Leah Brunoli, who I had the pleasure of meeting on the evening, she is a true inspiration, starting her own business at the very young age of 19 years old, she has created a successful brand, where not only she gets to do what she loves, but she also provides other young women finding their way in the hair and beauty industry, the opportunity to live out their passion.

The four salons are located in Mawson Lakes, Norwood, North Adelaide and now St Clair. With so many services on offer, including cuts, colours, brow-dries, waxing, makeup and nails, all you need to do is book yourself in and let the team do the rest.  On the night of pampering that’s exactly what I did, we were treated to hair, makeup and nails. You’ll see below the amazing job they did. I loved how one of the girls did my hair, not only did it turn out beautifully, but she did it so quickly and she didn’t spray it with so much hair spray, so I didn’t leave with stiff, crunchy hair!

The girls were so lovely, I definitely recommend going in for your next pamper session, also if you’re looking for wedding or special occasion hair and makeup, why not try them!

Lush Liquid Lipstick: Marsala

‘Marsala’ is the 2015 Pantone colour of the year.

This beautiful rich, wine colour with a purple tinge is the perfect colour in my opinion and Lush have made it even better by creating a marsala coloured liquid lipstick.

Lush sent me this little bottle of perfection to try out, as you will see below, it has a small applicator which allows you to fill in the lips without getting it all over the place. Also even though it is called a liquid lipstick, it’s not ‘annoyingly liquidy’ (my made up words!) so it doesn’t get everywhere. The texture feels really nice on the lips and it is so easy to apply. It is amazingly moisturising and I am not one to love the feeling of lipstick on my lips but I had no problem keeping this on my lips for quite a while. I found it long lasting, I think I had it on for about 6 hours and it would have lasted even longer but I had to take it off before having a shower. It also lasted through me eating waffles which really surprised me, no re-applying necessary!

As for the actual colour I can’t tell you how much I love it and trying this liquid lipstick from Lush has inspired me to try out some other colours in this range, let me know if you have tried any other colours, I would love to hear your opinions!

Before Bed Products

IMG_4982

My nightime skincare routine in the past involved washing my face with either a cleanser or a scrub, I had never thought about nor tried using extra products such as oils or serums. During my school years I suffered heavily with acne, my skin was really bad, and I couldn’t help but break the pimples and squeeze my skin until it went numb (literally). Everyone would always tell me “don’t break your pimples, you’ll get scars”, but I just didn’t listen, and now I’m dealing with the consequences! For a long time I thought that the scars would go away in time, and I would just have to be patient and let them fade away but as of recent (from the beginning of this year) I decided to start using one extra product before bed to see if my skin would become smoother and the scars would go away. I must mention that each of these products were either sent to me to try out, in a gift bag or gifted from a friend, so I have been lucky to be able to try these out without having to break the bank, however they have got me hooked so I would definitely re-purchase some of them.

Starting with the oils, Kosmea’s organic rose hip oil and Body Shop’s coconut oil. The first before bed product I tried was the rose hip oil, I was so impressed by it at the beginning, when applying it, it just absorbs into the skin instantly and in the morning my skin felt so much softer. I found myself lathering it on before bed every night, however after a while, when I was getting near to the end of the bottle, I was noticing that it wasn’t as effective as it was when I first started using it. I’m not sure if this was because my skin was getting used to it so the effect wasn’t as great or maybe I was just used to seeing the improvement and was unable to notice anything beyond. I then started using Body Shop’s coconut oil. Again after applying the coconut oil I found that my skin felt softer, however this oil absorbs into the skin a lot slower than the rose hip oil, so I found that if there’s any pet fur on my bed/pillow it would get stuck to my face. After a while it is fine though, it absorbs and in the morning the skin feels softer. I found that these oils are good for making the skin feel soft, but they didn’t really help with removing scars or dark spots. Out of the two, I would choose the rose hip oil to re-purchase.

The cucumber and guava firming eye balm  from the Jojoba company is meant to reduce the appearance of fine lines and puffiness around the eyes. After applying this balm under my eyes I found that I couldn’t really see any difference, however I also applied this to my forehead where I have have fine frown lines, and I actually noticed a difference, nothing too drastic, but I do feel like there was a slight reduction in the fine lines.

The Clinique dark spot corrector is a little sample a friend gave me (Thanks Ava!). I didn’t start using this one till very recently but I’ve found it to be really good, now this is good for reducing dark spots and acne scarring! It has a very light consistency, glides on the easily and absorbs pretty much instantly. If I keep using it, hopefully my scars will disappear.

Last but not least the serums, Jurlique’s Nutri-define Superior Retexturising Serum and Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair. These products I have found to be helpful in making the skin feel and look smoother. Again because I used the break my pimples and squeeze my skin, the texture of my skin became quite rough and uneven. I have found that the morning after applying either one of these products, my skin seems so much more smoother. Out of the two I can’t choose which one I would re-purchase just because they both have a very similar effect, if you are looking to buy one I would say just go for the one you find more reasonable in price.

Just on a side-note, I have found that changing the routine helps, because as I mentioned earlier, when I was just using the rose-hip oil, after a while I didn’t really notice a difference, so use one product for a couple of days and then use a different one, and so on.

What’s in my Makeup Bag?

So these are all the beauty products I carry around with me in my handbag. For those of you who know me well, you would know that I do not wear makeup everyday, I only wear makeup if I am going somewhere special. You’re probable thinking, “then why do you carry around makeup?!” Well I often have events to go to in the evening, so if I’m at work or out of the house during day, I keep my makeup with me so I can put it on after. I also have items which are not necessarily makeup but come in handy, such as hair ties.

As you can see in the photo my makeup bag is a small black Revlon pouch, which I received as part of a birthday present. The size is great for me because I don’t have a very big handbag so it fits in really well, and it fits all my stuff which is the main thing.

The makeup items in my pouch include a sample size of Benefit’s porfessional (which everyone knows about and loves), a mini Hello Flawless foundation from Benefit in hazelnut (I love this foundation, you only need the tiniest amount and it gives amazing coverage), another Benefit product; Gimme Brow (another cult favourite), a Rimmel black eyeliner (eyeliner is the only product I where on a daily basis, so this is a must have for me), the Australis neons and neutrals palette (I mentioned this one in a favourites post, it is the most perfect travel palette), a Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in grapefruit (this is great to keep in your handbag because not only is it moisturising but it also has a little bit of colouring in it) and the final makeup item is a Rimmel lip balm from the Rita Ora collection (I love how easy these are to apply!).

The ‘other’ items I have in my makeup pouch include cleansing wipes by Murine (these are special wipe for the eyes, I always get itchy eyes, especially around hay fever time, so these are perfect to have with me at all times), a Revlon role-on perfume called Splendid (this also came with the makeup pouch, it’s a great size to carry around, and because it’s role-on there’s no spillage), the Kosmea hydrating Rose Mist (because I tend to do my makeup at the end of the day, I like to spray this on my face before, it makes my skin feel so much cleaner), two hair ties and a clip (there’s always a day when I will need a hair tie and/or a clip!) and finally two makeup brushes in two different sizes (one for the face and one for the eyes).

So that’s everything I carry around with me, let me know if you have any of the same things, or if you have any suggestions of things I should add to my makeup bag.

Nail Art using Eles Nail Polish

I was sent some vibrant Eles Nail Polish from their Brighton Collection, to try out. So I thought I would play around with them and do some nail art. Here is what I did:

1. Paint all the nails in the lime sorbet colour. I used 2 coats to get full coverage.

2. Take the deckchair blue colour and with the brush pointing down towards your finger, paint 3 lines, gradually make each line longer than the other. I found that because the brush is nice and wide, 3 lines fit my nails perfectly, except the thumb need 4 lines. This technique gives you a pretty scalloped edge.

3. I then took a nail art polish I had, which has a thin brush perfect for thin lines, with the brush pointing down towards the finger draw lines diagonally from the inner point of each scallop.

4. I finished the nails over with a top coat for extra shine.

And this is the final look! Let me know what you think, and if you try it, I would love to see pics!

I’m really loving these Eles nail polish, especially because of their ‘5 free’ formula, which means they don’t have DBP, Toluene, Formualdehyde or Camphor!

The Strand Experience: A hair lounge in Hyde Park

Adelaide’s hottest new salon launched in style.  Invited guests were pampered with hair treatments, celebrity style blow outs, delicious bites from King William Road cafes and French champagne. The red carpet was rolled out and as we walked in we felt like true celebrities….

I attended the launch along with my sister, Susan (from Fashion Adventurer) and Emily (from Adelaide Style File). We each had a hair stylist and were given the option of choosing from a range of celebrity hair styles. I went for the ‘Bingle Beach Waves’ (inspired by Lara Bingle).

My hair was washed (including a hair treatment and an amazing head massage), blow dried, and then styled using a hair straightner. My stylist for the day was the owner of The Strand; Heidi Jehle.

I was so happy with how Heidi went through each of the steps with me and even went the extra mile of showing me how to get the perfect relaxed waves!

Once my hair was done, I went and had a look at how the other girls were going. How beautiful do the curls look in their hair (as seen below)!

So, here is my before and after look. I have always loved the look of relaxed waves on short hair but I could never get it right myself, and therefore just thought it didn’t look good, but now I am inspired to try this look again!

We had such a fun, girly day out. The Strand really went above and beyond to make sure we were looked after, it was such a nice feeling that we could relax while being pampered. We all agreed that we would definitely go back for the Strand experience.

Below is a photo of myself with Heidi. As I was getting my hair done I asked her about her life as a hair dresser and this new venture, here’s what she shared with me:

“I have a passion for hair dressing! I started my first salon, La Tease in Blakes Crossing 2 years ago and I managed a salon for 5 years previously. It is stressful but exciting to buy my own salon, since I was little I wanted to own a shop and I wanted to be a hairdresser.

I don’t have any hairdressers in my family but my mum is a make up artist, and both mum and grandma have natural talent for doing hair but did not pursue it as a career.

I wanted to open a salon that has a different concept, which provides a service where every customer who comes in will feel like they are getting the celebrity treatment.

At the moment at the Strand we have 2 hair stylists and a concierge, the concierge is in place to provide customers with whatever they require as they are getting their hair done.

My hopes with the Strand are to create a movement in Adelaide with hairdressing, as well as set up more Strands around Adelaide.

Career highlights so far include opening 2 salons, styling Lisa Emmanuel’s hair and styling for the advertiser.

For those wanting to get into the Hairdressing industry, I will say that it is not easy, there are more downs than ups, but if it’s your passion, follow it!”

Thankyou so much to The Strand for pampering us, if you want to be pampered by The Strand, check them out!

Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner

I recently received a special little package from Benefit Cosmetics…..

Inside was the Benefit They’re Real Mascara and the all new They’re Real Gel Liner Pen….along with some cute little jewels

I was so excited….I had seen all the posts and all the positive comments about this brand new product by Benefit, on social media. It’s an amazing invention and is going to make my life so much easier when it comes to getting the perfect eye liner line!

I couldn’t wait to try it out, after practicing on my hand… I went for the eyes. It was so easy, the gel just glided  and the shape of the tip is perfect for getting a precise line around the eye and creating a wing.

Here’s the final look….what do you think?

Benefit’s They’re Real Push-up Liner is available in stores now….get your hands on it as soon as you can!!!

Current Beauty Favourites

I have recently purchased and been sent some products that I have been really enjoying, so I thought I would share them with you…

1. Beauty by Calvin Klein
I received this perfume as a birthday present and I don’t wear it all the time, but when I do someone always asks me what perfume I’m wearing. It has quite a strong scent, I would say it has a floral scent but it’s also slightly masculine like. I also like the simple packaging, its just cool!
2. Nutrimetics Lip Apeel
So this lip product is something I always recommend to my friends (please don’t mind that it looks a little dirty, I just get a lot of use out of it!). I’m not a huge fan of most of the nutrimetics skin care products, but this lip product has really worked for me. It has a gommage substance on the bottom and a lip balm on top. Firstly, you rub the white gommage over your lips, leave it on for a few minutes until it has dried, then wipe it off, it is basically a lip peel taking away dry skin, once the white stuff is off, I wash my lips and apply the balm. If I don’t feel like doing the scrub first I also just apply this balm before putting on lipstick and it makes my lips feel nice and smooth.

3. Body Shop Coconut Beautifying Oil
I’m sure you’ve all heard about how good coconut oil is good for the hair and skin, but when I first tried pure coconut oil on my skin I feel like it did’nt really make any difference, so I just gave up on it. I was recently sent this body shop coconut oil to try, and I am actually really loving it! I put it on just before I go to bed (most nights) and as I am putting it on my skin just feels so soft….it’s like magic!
4. Australis Neon’s and Neutral’s Palette
I found this palette in the discount box at Priceline, it was reduced to AU$2.50 (I was so EXCITED). I’m not one to use daring eyeshadow colours but I thought, it’s only $2.50, it has the neutral colours, and I can just play around with the neon colours….so why not! I’ve found this to be so handy, I have been using the neutral colours for highlighting and contouring, and I am so happy with them. I keep it in my bag, it’s the perfect size to carry around, plus it has a huge mirror!

5. Eles Deckchair Blue Nail Polish and Jordana Clear Coat
I was recently sent this Eles nail polish (which I will be using in an upcoming nail art tutorial!) and I am very impressed. First of all is a has a wide, thick brush which means you only need like 2 strokes to cover the whole nail and secondly the quality is so good that only one coat is needed for full coverage!
As for the Jordana Clear Coat, I actually borrowed this from my mum, and I have to say it is the best top coat I have ever used! It glides on so easily over the nail polish and it doesn’t smudge any nail art!

6. Lush Gorgeous Facial Moisturiser
In celebration of the new look Lush store in Rundle Mall, Lush offered some Adelaide Beauty Bloggers, a few products to try out. One of the products I was sent was their Gorgeous Facial Moisturiser. I have been really enjoying this moisturiser, is has an amazing floral scent and considering it’s in a tub, it’s actually easy to use. I just tilt it slightly and dab my finger in. It has a light consistency but when you rub it into the skin it feels extremely moisturing!
I would love to hear what your current favourite products are or if you have tried any of these products?
